Combine villages in one day
Villages sit close together in clusters. Omodos, Vasa, Koilani and Lofou make an easy wine day; Kakopetria, Galata and the Marathasa villages make a painted-churches day.
Check church opening times
The UNESCO painted churches have a keyholder or set hours and may close at lunchtime. Dress modestly and ask before taking photos inside.
Weekdays are quieter
Popular villages such as Omodos, Lefkara and Kakopetria fill up on Sundays and holidays. Come on a weekday for quiet lanes and easy parking.
Taste and buy local
Look for village wine and zivania, halloumi, loukoumi, spoon sweets, rose water, lace and weaving, sold by the families who make them.
Getting to the villages
Bus, car or tour?
Rural buses are few and often run on weekdays only. Each village page shows which lines stop there. For most mountain and wine villages, a hire car, taxi or day tour is the easiest way to see several in a day.
Open the journey plannerCyprus villages: questions
What are the most beautiful villages in Cyprus?
Favourites include Omodos, Lofou and Koilani in the Limassol wine country, Kakopetria and Kalopanagiotis in the Troodos valleys, Lefkara for its lace and silver, Fikardou for its preserved 18th-century houses, and Kathikas, Kritou Terra and Pano Panagia in Paphos district.
Which Cyprus villages have festivals?
Popular village festivals include the Agros Rose Festival in May, the Pedoulas Cherry Festival in June, the Lefkara Festival in August, grape feasts in Arsos, Lofou, Vasa and Koilani from September to November, the Omodos Holy Cross fair on 14 September, the Kyperounta Apple Festival in October and zivania festivals in Alona and Pelendri in November. Use the festival calendar on this page to see what is on each month.
Can you visit Cyprus villages by bus?
Some, yes. Solea valley villages such as Kakopetria, Galata and Evrychou, the Famagusta red-soil villages, Kiti and Athienou have regular buses. Many wine and mountain villages have only a few buses a day, often timed for school and work, and some have none. Each village page lists the bus lines that stop there, taken from the official timetables.
Which villages have UNESCO painted churches?
The ten Painted Churches in the Troodos Region are at or near Kakopetria, Galata, Kalopanagiotis, Moutoullas, Pedoulas, Nikitari (Asinou), Lagoudera, Platanistasa, Palaichori and Pelendri. Kouklia is part of the separate Paphos World Heritage Site.
When is the best time to visit Cypriot villages?
Spring (March to May) brings green hills, flowers and Easter traditions. Autumn (September to November) is grape and apple harvest time, with many festivals. Mountain villages are cool in summer and can have snow in winter.
