About the village Silikou
Silikou sits at 650 metres in the Kouris valley near Trimiklini, Lania and Monagri. One story says its first settlers came from Silica in Syria around 1200; another links the name to vasilikou, royal, after a branch of the royal family who took refuge here.
Plenty of water and its height made Silikou a centre of wine, zivania and Commandaria. A cluster of very old olive trees stands between the old Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot quarters, a few metres from the Commandaria Museum and the ruins of the old mosque.
