About the village Kouklia
From around 1200 BC Palaepaphos was a major religious centre, famous across the Mediterranean for its open-air altar of Aphrodite, where she was worshipped as a conical stone. It was a kingdom until the capital moved to Nea Paphos in the late 4th century BC.
The Lusignans built a sugar mill here, one of the best-preserved medieval cane-sugar refineries in the region. Kouklia was inscribed by UNESCO with Nea Paphos in 1980.
