About the trail

Smigies offers a choice of two loops from the same picnic site. Both start with coastal views west to Lara Bay, then open up east over Chrysochou Bay towards Latchi, Polis, Pachyammos and the Paphos Forest, and both pass the Piana Ridge fire lookout.

The long route continues through a dense section of the Akamas forest, past old mines, magnesium works and abandoned kilns. It connects with the Adonis trail at Kefalovrysia.

Note on the figures: An older trail guide gave the long route as 7.5 km; the current trail page and 2026 map give 6 km.

Plan and pack

When to go

Autumn to spring is the most comfortable time; the trail map notes wild orchids in winter and spring. Summer temperatures in Cyprus can exceed 40°C, so walk early in the morning in summer and carry plenty of water.

Tips for this trail

  • The short loop is a good introduction to the Akamas.
  • The neighbouring Pissouromoutti trail (3 km, grade 2) also starts at the picnic site.

Pick the right grade

Grades come from the official trail map: 1 star is easy, 2 is moderate, 3 is difficult (steep, rocky or long). Choose a route that matches the least experienced person in your group.

Carry water and sun protection

Most fountains on the trails are not drinking water. Take plenty of water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; summer temperatures can exceed 40°C on the coast.

Wear proper shoes

Trails are rocky, with steep slopes and stream crossings in places. Walking shoes or boots with good grip make a big difference.

Plan the return first

Rural buses can be infrequent and phone signal patchy. Know your last departure or fix a pickup time before you start, especially on linear trails.

Bus

Pafos Buses route 623 runs between Polis Chrysochous and Neo Chorio. The picnic site is about 2.5 km beyond the village, so a bus alone does not reach the start.
